Cuban president highlights pregnant women’s vaccination against Covid

Havana, Jul 29 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Thursday highlighted the beginning of the Covid-19 immunization for pregnant women, breastfeeding women and transplant recipients throughout the country, where the Cuban-made Abdala vaccine will be administered.

On his official Twitter account, the president recalled that pregnant women are among the most vulnerable groups, since 22 of them have died due to complications associated to the disease and several remain in intensive care units.

These people will receive the vaccine developed by the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center (CIGB)in a staggered manner, with intervals at zero, 14 and 28 days.

Cuban health authorities plan to administer all three doses conceived in the scheme to 60 percent of Cubans by the end of August, as part of a vaccination strategy developed by territories and vulnerable groups.

In addition, more than 3,000 nephropathic patients who are undergoing hemodialysis are currently receiving the Abdala vaccine to complete the cycle in early August.

Abdala is the first vaccine against Covid-19 that has been developed in Latin America and has shown 92.28-percent efficacy in Phase III of clinical trials, so it received authorization from the regulatory entity for its emergency use.
