Lebanese power company warns of total blackout in country

Beirut, Aug 1 (Prensa Latina) The Electricité du Liban state power company issued a statement warning that in a few days Lebanon may face a total blackout due to lack of fuel, spare parts and necessary maintenance.

According to the statement, the competent authorities must deliver funds to buy fuel oil and all the necessary tools, lest power generation grinds to a halt.

The company is currently producing about 800 MW a day, which covers about four hours of energy per day, although in some places it is only one or two.

According to the statement, if the Deir Amar plant and two energy barges came into operation, the system would have about two thousand MW and there would be a relief.

A recent agreement with Iraq will make it possible to have one million tons of oil a year, a third of Lebanon’s total needs, according to the power company, But at this moment a total interruption of generation is near.
