Cuba favors treaty on prohibition of nuclear weapons

Havana, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Monday favored the promotion of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons as a way for their total and definitive elimination.

Rodriguez assured that ‘the abominable atomic bombings’ on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, call for a relentless fight for a world free of nuclear weapons.

He tweeted that 76 years ago, during World War II (1939-1945), the United States dropped the bombs, which killed more than 200,000 people, including children, and their consequences are lingering today.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons entered into force on January 22, 2021, after reaching the necessary 50 ratifications.

Cuba signed it on September 20, 2017, the day it was opened for signature at the United Nations headquarters, and was the fifth country to reaffirm the document on January 30, 2018, which is one more example of its commitment to general and complete disarmament, according to the website of the Foreign Ministry.
