Weekly Covid-19 death toll increases in U.S.

Weekly Covid-19 death toll increases in U.S.

Washington, Aug 17 (Prensa Latina) The Covid-19 death toll in the United States rose to 4,800 in the past week. That's more than triple the figure of the relative lull in early July, according to the USA Today newspaper.

Specialists said that the surge in Covid-19 cases in recent weeks is due to the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, which has led to a major increase in state hospitalizations, the Centers for the Control and Prevention of Diseases (CDC) reported.

Five states exceeded record numbers this weekend of daily Covid-19 cases: Florida, Louisiana, Hawaii, Oregon and Mississippi. These states are currently reporting over 100 Covid-19 patients per every 100,000 inhabitants daily.

Regarding Florida, the toll of coronavirus-infected people admitted in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) rose on Monday, with which the occupancy rate must be higher than the 91.35% reported on Sunday by the Department of Health and Human Services.

The rise in infections occurs even though nearly 70% adults are vaccinated with at least one dose, said the Head of the pandemic data at the White House, Cyrus Shahpar.

On the other hand, the number of hospitalized children reached 902 on Saturday, raising about 2.4% of admissions.
