Access to water is a basic human right, says UN Chief

United Nations, Aug 25 (Prensa Latina) Access to water is a basic human right, but three of 10 people are unable to wash their hands with water and soap during the Covid-19 pandemic, UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres posted on Twitter, on the occasion of the World Water Week 2021.

Guterres also posted that better recovering from the coronavirus-caused health crisis means to invest in sanitation services for all.

Under the theme: ‘Building Resilience Faster’, the 2021 World Water Week edition began on Monday, sessions of which will be held virtually due to Covid-19.

The majestic event will be attended by over 150 international delegations, focused on finding out concrete solutions to greatest global water challenges.

Water scarcity, climate crisis, impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and issues closely related to food safety, health and biodiversity will be the main issues of the event.

Torgny Holmgren, Executive Director of the Stockholm International Water Institute, highlighted the key role of water for climate goals and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
