US organizations ask Biden to eliminate sanctions against Cuba

Washington, Sep 11 (Prensa Latina) More than 45 human rights organizations asked President Joe Biden to urgently end his unilateral sanctions against countries like Cuba, diplomatic sources disclosed on Friday.

The current US administration has moved away from a campaign promise, instead of promoting normalization of relations with Cuba it tightens the blockade and imposes new ‘maximum pressure’ restrictions, Cuban Ambassador in Washington Lianys Torres posted on Twitter.

In the text, Ms. Torres recalled that UN experts asked nations, such as the United States, to eliminate unilateral coercive measures to favor social and economic development of thousands of people worldwide, as well as an effective fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

One of the suggestions that US society makes to its government is to issue a temporary global license that makes it possible to send the necessary aid to face the health crisis, for which they are also requesting authorization for financial institutions to roll out required transactions.

The letter, which also refers to countries such as Venezuela and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, is addressed to Joe Biden, the Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen, and the US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

In the case of Cuba, that message comes while current US administration harps on an aggressive policy toward Cuba and on tightening the economic, commercial and financial US blockade, despite Joe Biden´s electoral promise to turn this strategy around.
