Cuban FM strongly rejects US obstacles to family remittances

Havana, Sep 16 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez on Wednesday strongly rejected the US drawbacks to send family remittances to his country and championed the legitimate right of families to assist their loved ones in times of need.

Obstacles against this mechanism repeat fiction used by the Donald Trump administration (2017-2020) that Cuba seizes part of the remittance amount, Bruno Rodríguez live-tweeted.

This is how the United States acts to satisfy the interests of a minority sector that makes money from the Cuban people´s suffering, he added.

In August, the Director of the Commercial Company Fincimex Yamil Hernández denied that the Cuban government or the Army appropriated 20 or 40% of money remitted from the United States.

Such a statement, repeated by US politicians, put an end to the Western Union’s relations with Cuban institutions in charge of processing family remittances, specifically Fincimex, in October 2020.

However, Mr. Hernández said that the remittance amounts sent were not subject to any tax upon entering the country.

‘The recipient receives the remitted amount in full,’ he remarked when denying the accusations.
