Demonstrations continued in Colombia this week

Bogota, Oct 2 (Prensa Latina) Trade unionists, indigenous people, politicians, among other sectors, resumed social demonstrations in Colombia these past days following the five-month national strike, and despite police using violence again.

A historic national strike started on April 28 of this year against the neoliberal policies of the Duque administration, considered the biggest social outburst in the last 70 years, which lasted nearly three months and spread across the country.

The National Strike Committee, main convener of those protests, suspended the demonstrations in June, due to the militarization of the streets, police violence and the government’s refusal to sign a preliminary agreement to guarantee security for the social protest, and claimed that it would submit a set of bills to Congress.

On July 27, the Committee and more than 50 congresspeople presented the announced bills, aimed at benefiting more than 30 million Colombians affected by the pandemic and the resulting economic crisis.

Basic emergency income as a measure to guarantee civic rights; universal free higher education across the country; police reform to strengthen its civil nature, among others, are some of the initiatives of this law.

Polo Democratico Senator Ivan Cepeda and other social and political organizations sent a third report on the situation of crimes against humanity committed in Colombia amid the demonstrations staged since April 28.

It tells of at least 3,954 victims of human rights violations between April 28 and September 28.

Furthermore, it includes new 136 violent attacks, compared to the second report sent on June 7, which revealed 1,088 victims, 513 of whom were identified.
