Cuba denounces at UNESCO impact of US blockade

Paris, Oct 12 (Prensa Latina) Cuba's Ambassador to UNESCO Yahima Esquivel on Tuesday denounced at the agency's Executive Council the criminal nature of the US blockade against the island and its tightening in times of pandemic.

During the meeting, the diplomat described the economic, commercial and financial siege as ‘the cruelest and most prolonged blockade ever imposed against any nation’ and repudiated its opportunistic implementation.

In that sense, the official pointed out in the specialized UN agency in education, science and culture issues that the administration of President Donald Trump tightened the blockade with 243 measures, many of them amid the Covid-19 pandemic, hostile actions that are still in force after President Joe Biden took office.

This unjust policy contradicts the call by the United Nations and UNESCO to put solidarity and cooperation to the conflicts in this definitive hour for humanity, she stressed.

Esquivel reiterated in the Executive Council the importance of respecting the principles of the United Nations Charter and assuming UNESCO’s values and mandates as the best tools for mitigating the pandemic and its consequences, to be committed to cooperation in the face of the global challenges.

Regarding Covid-19 and the US aggressiveness against Cuba, the diplomat stressed that in such an adverse scenario, the Caribbean nation developed three vaccines and two vaccine candidates to neutralize the viral disease.
