Former President Karzai says Afghan government needs legitimacy

Kabul, Oct 18 (Prensa Latina) Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Monday that the current Taliban government needs internal legitimacy to get international recognition and Pakistan must refrain from interfering.

Karzai noted that status can only be achieved through the Afghan people’s will, either as an election or the holding of Loya Jirga, a great traditional council, Ariana news agency reported.

The former president stressed that Afghanistan’s history is in a critical situation and Afghans must unite and form a government based on the people’s will.

Legitimacy in our own country for the current government or any other future one is the basis for recognition by foreign countries and the international community, Karzai said.

Pakistani leaders, including Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Quresh, favor the Taliban and urge the international community to work with the new government in Kabul.

Finally, Karzai added that Pakistan does not represent the Afghan people, and as a fraternal country, it cannot behave this way; on the contrary, it should establish a civilized relationship with his nation.
