Camagüey, a cultural reference in Cuba

Camagüey, Cuba, Oct 20 (Prensa Latina) Known for its Historic Center, a World Heritage Site, this city is currently a reference of Cuban culture on the National Culture Day.

In addition to its rich cultural components, the city founded 507 years ago on the orders of Diego Velazquez, is a bastion in the formation of Cuban identity.

Among the most important chapters in Cuba’s largest province is the first Constitution of the Republic in Arms, in the town of Guaimaro in 1869.

By 1608, the poem Espejo de Paciencia (Mirror of Patience), by Silvestre de Balboa, would become the first literary creation recognized in the country, a fact that would make Camagüey the cradle of Cuban literature.

The literary sector has grown since then, and Camagüey also boasts daughters such as the illustrious poet Gertrudis Gomez de Avellaneda (1814-1873).

This city is also the cradle of prominent Cuban cultural figures such as the national poet, Nicolas Guillen, and Carlos J. Finlay, the scientist who discovered the transmitting agent of yellow fever.
