Civilians killed by mistake in Somalia

Mogadishu, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) on Friday admitted that its forces killed seven civilians in the southern region of Low Shabelle by mistake, an event which is being investigated by a commission.

The Investigation Board, set up by the Mission, said that unfortunately the victims were killed on August 10 in an operation in Golwein city, so the conduct of the personnel involved is being assessed, according to an AMISOM statement.

After reporting that those responsible for the killings will be accounted for their behavior, the source said that these people were killed due to a presumed violation of the Rules of Engagement of the peacemaking organization.

It also reported that they were killed when Ugandan forces were patrolling the route that connects Beldamin and Golwein, after an armed clash with ambushed fighters from the radical Islamist group Al-Shabab.

On October 12, the head of the peacemaking organization, Ambassador Francisco Mandeira, highlighted the contribution of troops from Uganda and other countries to securing peace and stability in Somalia.

AMISOM, which helps protect key infrastructure in Somalia, including airports and sea ports, among other tasks, is made up of soldiers from Uganda, Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia, deployed in the southern and central regions of this country, according to government sources.
