Moscow and Seoul to resume negotiations on Korean peninsula

Moscow, Oct 27 (Prensa Latina) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his counterpart from the Republic of Korea, Chung Eui-yong, on Tuesday called for the early resumption of negotiations on the Korean peninsula with the participation of all parties involved.

At a joint press conference after the official talks in this capital, the Russian diplomat noted that the two parties discussed in detail the situation in that subregion and in Northeast Asia in general.

‘We are convinced that there is no alternative but to find a political and diplomatic solution to all problems in the region,’ including all parties, the Russian foreign minister said.

He stressed that the search for a long-term and acceptable way out of the conflict for both the ROK and the DPRK should cover the whole range of problems in the territory.

According to Lavrov, Moscow and Seoul agree on the ‘particular importance of all parties involved to refrain from actions that could provoke an increase in tension.’

For his part, Chung Eui-yong stressed the Kremlin’s readiness to cooperate with his country to facilitate the resumption of inter-Korean negotiations and the speedy restoration of the peace process.

‘We count on Russia’s constructive role in establishing lasting peace and achieving complete denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula,’ he said.

According to the South Korean foreign minister, the two nations reaffirmed the high level of their relations as reliable partners in ensuring development and peace in both the area and the Eurasian region as a whole, in addition to the interest in promoting bilateral cooperation.
