Under the level-3 travel warning, the second highest in the 4-level system, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommended South Koreans to cancel their plans to travel to Ethiopia and those who are already there to travel to safe places.
Seoul previously issued a level-3 alert for the Ethiopian regions with borders with Sudan, South Sudan, Eritrea and Kenya, and the rest of the country was under a special warning against trips abroad due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Ethiopian government this week declared the state of emergency amid a civil war that is being waged against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
According to reports, the rebel forces have advanced toward the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry informed that it will closely monitor the security situation and adjust the alert when necessary.
