Early in the morning, the plenary session of the Lower House decided, with 78 votes in favor, 67 against and 3 abstentions, to prosecute the president after revelations about irregularities in the sale of the Dominga mining project in the tax haven of the British Virgin Islands.

“We are living a historic moment, and that is only possible thanks to the unity of the entire opposition,” the deputy head of legislators from the Socialist Party (PS) said.

Naranjo, who was in charge of filing the indictment, had to postpone his speech at the plenary session for 14 hours, so that the deputies who finished their Covid-19 lockdown on Monday could participate in the voting.

“We have a president who has acted outside the administrative probity required in office and who, in addition, has seriously damaged the image of the nation,” Naranjo said.

According to the documents leaked by an international journalistic investigation in 2010, nine months after Piñera took office in his first term, his family sold the project to build two mines and a port for 152 million dollars.
