Niamey, Nov 9 (Prensa Latina) The fire that devastated an elementary school in the city of Maradi, southern Niger, caused the death of 22 students between three and eight years old, authorities confirmed today in this capital.

Dozens of people were injured, according to media reports.

The causes of the incident, which occurred the day before, have not been identified yet, but the precarious conditions of the schools in this impoverished country in the center of Africa favor such tragedies.

The lack of appropriate buildings for education and other activities forces to build classrooms with boards and thatched roofs in which the students are crowded, easy prey for the flames in the midst of the drought that devastates several areas of Africa.

This is the second catastrophe of the same kind when 20 children were killed in a school on the outskirts of the capital that was also engulfed in flames in mid-April.
