UN Secretary General continues negotiations at COP26

António Guterres COP26
United Nations, Nov 11 (Prensa Latina) The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, continues the negotiations for the agreement of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26).

This was reported by the spokesman Stéphane Dujarric, who explained that Guterres must participate in the high-level event on global climate action at COP26, scheduled for this Thursday.

Guterres and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson met in Glasgow on Wednesday with a group of observers from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The UN Secretary General held other meetings with the Prime Ministers of Fiji, Frank Bainimarama, and of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, the spokesman said, and met with the delegation of the United States Congress, led by the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States, Nancy Pelosi.

The presidency of the COP26 published a few hours ago a first draft of the final agreement, in which countries are urged to “review and reinforce” the reduction of emissions to keep alive the objective of the Paris Agreement to limit the warming of temperature at 1.5 degrees Celsius.

For this reason it is necessary to reduce global emissions by 45 percent by 2030, and to zero by mid-century, although the world is currently very far from reaching those goals.

According to the latest estimates, greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 will increase by 13.7 percent compared to 2010, while the short-term plans put in place by the countries would mean an increase in global temperature of 2.7 degrees Celsius.
