Haitian gas stations collapse after gangs truce

Port-au-Prince, Nov 19 (Prensa Latina) Haitian gas stations on Friday continue to collapse, a week after a truce by the armed gangs to allow the distribution of fuel.

The long lines blocked avenues and generated tension among customers, and even two fires were reported in gas stations in Port-au-Prince and others in cities, which destroyed several vehicles and motorcycles.

The Government prohibited the sale of fuel in depots, and instructed the companies that need to supply themselves to send a representative; however, the provision was not fully complied with.

In less than a week, more than six million gallons of diesel and gasoline were distributed to the market, and most of the stations that operate are working at full capacity; however, the demand is still very high.

“This is the first time the country has experienced such a shortage of fuel. Perhaps the hole to be filled is so deep that stabilizing the market is difficult,” David Turnier, president of the National Association of Petroleum Product Distributors, told Le Nouvelliste newspaper.
