I think this is a demonstration of the importance we attach to our exchanges with Central Asian countries, Borrell said after a meeting with the foreign ministers of the region’s five countries.

The official added that the EU attended the 17th edition of the bilateral Ministerial Meeting in Tajikistan with a high-level delegation, which also included Jutta Urpilainen, Commissioner for International Partnerships.

Borrell referred to the Global Gateway initiative, which he said will be approved next week, through which the EU will support the region’s nations in building bridges and infrastructure.

Our objective is to facilitate connections and to do so in a sustainable way, taking care of environmental concerns to be compatible with the development needs of the people, he said.

Finally, Borrell indicated that the bloc will support these countries regarding the unstable situation in Afghanistan and the sustainable and ecological recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
