Former president Figueres loses lead for Costa Rican presidency

Costa Rica, elecciones, Figueres
San Jose, Nov 24 (Prensa Latina) Former President Jose Maria Figueres (1994-1998) lost the lead he had a month ago in his attempt to return to the presidency of Costa Rica, according to the results of a recent poll.

According to the poll from the Center for Research and Political Studies of the University of Costa Rica (CIEP-UCR), Figueres is first in the citizens’ vote intention for the February 2022 general elections, but he is now in a technical tie with Lineth Saborio, a candidate of the Social Christian Unity Party (PUSC).

If Figueres was leading in October with 19 percent the race of 26 aspirants to the presidency of this nation for the 2022-2026 period, he dropped this month 13 percent (six points less than in October), only three points more than Saborio, who is second with 10 percent (two points more).

Despite this, CIEP-UCR researchers predict a runoff, as the two strongest candidates are today far from the 40 percent required in Costa Rica to be elected in first round, while undecided voters account for 53 percent, six more than a month ago.

With less than three months to the February presidential elections, the survey’s coordinator Ronald Alfaro affirmed “there is no doubt effects of the corruption scandals”, in the results of this month’s survey.
