Uruguayan government recognizes malnutrition in Montevideo

Montevideo, Nov 26 (Prensa Latina) The president of the State Health Services Administration of Uruguay, Leonardo Cipriani, opted today for cooperation with the Municipality of Montevideo, in view of the detection here of 223 cases of malnutrition.

Such data, which include children and pregnant women, emerged from an investigation carried out by the Municipality, as part of a plan of surveys and corrective measures of the current Frente Amplio administration.

The Director of Health of Montevideo, Virgina Cardozo, and the Director of Social Development, Mercedes Clara, went to the Departmental Board to report on these cases and to propose food support of up to almost US$ 200 per month, as well as nutritional education.

However, councilors of the National Party described as false what was said in October by Mayor Carolina Cosse, who alluded to “symptoms of malnutrition”, based on a study by the University of the Republic.

In turn, the Uruguayan Minister of Social Development, Martin Lema, disqualified those results with epithets of negligence and lack of executive capacity.

On the other hand, Cipriani finally acknowledged the phenomenon of malnutrition and assured that the staff of the agency he leads has already visited 20 of the affected children and will try to extend contacts to the rest, in conjunction with other government agencies.
