Cuba highlights need for commitment to climate change

Havana, Dec 1 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Wednesday denounced the lack of commitment by the developed countries to the efforts to reduce the effects of climate change.

On his Twitter account, the head of Cuban diplomacy stressed that at the recently held United Nations Summit on climate change, COP26, those nations refused to recognize their historic responsibility for greenhouse gas emissions.

Far from making ambitious commitments to fill the gap caused by their defaults, they intend to shift the burden to developing countries, he noted.

Rodriguez added that this attitude is an open contempt for the principles of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.

He also stressed that the responsibilities for this matter are common, “but differentiated, NOT shared.”

At the conclusion of COP26, in mid-November in Glasgow, Scotland, Cuba expressed dissatisfaction with its result because it did not meet the needs of the planet.

“It requires a greater provision of means of implementation and that developed countries provide funding according to their historic responsibility,” Rodriguez said on that occasion.
