Minister Javier Garcia noted that this step will replace a “discriminatory and anachronistic” measure, on the occasion of the World Day for the fight against the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), celebrated every December 1.

He said that a Technical Commission and the criteria of the director of the Chair of Infectious Diseases at the University of the Republic, Professor Julio Medina, were involved in reaching this decision.

According to the specialist, an HIV carrier, if he/she follows the appropriate treatment, does not transmit the disease, nor does he/she have any inhibition from the professional point of view.

The Ministry of Public Health reported that there were 876 confirmed HIV cases in 2002, with a prevalence in the general population of less than 0.4 percent.
