Mexican president calls to comply with Covax mechanism

Mexico, Dec 3 (Prensa Latina) Mexican President Manuel Lopez Obrador's speech at the meeting between Latin America and the Caribbean and the European Union focused on a call on countries that produce vaccines to comply with the Covax mechanism, local media reported on Friday.

At the virtual speech on Thursday, the president insisted on the need to create initiatives to provide Covid-19 vaccines to the nations that most need them , strengthen the leading role of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the expedite authorization of more effective medicines, La Jornada daily reported. Covax is a fund of global access to Covid-19 vaccines created at the request of the United Nations and managed by the WHO.

Lopez Obrador, accompanied by part of his cabinet, inaugurated the meeting as the pro tempore president of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, participated in the meeting representing the European Union.

The health situation, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on different spheres and the economic recovery are some of the topics on the meeting’s agenda, which aims to overcome these and other challenges posed to the countries from both regions.
