WHO reaffirms need for more Covid-19 vaccines for Africa

Geneva, Dec 6 (Prensa Latina) The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday reaffirmed the need to increase the production of Covid-19 vaccines for Africa, where inequality in the access to immunizers persists and the situation has worsened due to the Omicron variant. During his virtual intervention at the event of the Association for Vaccine Manufacturing in Africa, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed that as long as inequity persists, the more opportunities the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the cause of the current pandemic, has to spread and mutate in unpredictable ways.

“More than 100 countries have not reached the 40 percent Covid-19 immunization target yet and more than half of them, mainly in Africa, are at risk of missing it by the end of the year, mainly because they cannot access the vaccines they need,” he said.

He pointed out that 80 percent of the world’s vaccines remained in the richest nations, while low-income countries, most of them in Africa, have only received 0.6 percent of these products.

Given this situation, he praised the fact that a month ago the African Medicines Agency treaty came into force, “paving the way for improving the quality, safety, efficacy, availability and affordability of medicines and vaccines across the continent.”

“WHO and its partners established an mRNA technology transfer center in South Africa to boost the development of the products on the continent and created an industry talent development program in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation, specifically targeting Africa,” he said. jg/abo/gas/cdg
