Bills on euthanasia discussed in Uruguay

Montevideo, Dec 12 (Prensa Latina) The issue of euthanasia in Uruguay on Sunday made its way to parliament in the form of two bills that will merge eventually, according their respective sponsors.

The first bill was proposed by deputy from Partido Colorado, Ope Pasquet, in March 2020 and was consulted several times without the parliament making any decisive progress.

Some days ago, the Broad Front (FA) presented its own bill, which is signed by legislators Luis Enrique Gallo, Ana Olivera, Lucia Etcheverry and Cristina Lustemberg.

Gallo told El País daily that “the discrepancy with Pasquet’s bill lies in the fact that it focuses on freeing the doctor from taking responsability, whereas the Broad Front considers that it should be a human being’s fundamental right in certain circumstances.”

However, he clarified that, for conscientious objection, the physician can refuse to practice it and the health institution, public or private, must appoint another health professional.

The Broad Front initiative reserves the right to request euthanasia to patients with terminal, incurable, untreatable and irreversible illnesses who endure unbearable suffering and must do it in writing twice with a ten-day difference.

A survey conducted by the Medical Union in May, 2020, showed that 82 percent of Uruguayans approve euthanasia for extreme illnesses.
