Russia calls on the West to provide immediate security guarantees

Moscow, Dec 26 (Prensa Latina) Russian President Vladimir Putin made clear this week that it is to the West, and not the Kremlin, to provide immediate legal security guarantees, when explaining the proposals presented to the United States and NATO.

In recent days, the Russian president spoke on the telephone about this and other issues with French President Enmanuel Macron; German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz; Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel; and a week earlier with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

In every conversation with his counterparts and at his annual press conference, Putin called on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to halt its advance to the east and showed his concern over the situation in Ukraine, which has become a possible threat to his country.

During a debate with reporters on Thursday, the head of State claimed that Moscow made it loud and clear that the situation is unacceptable and his country’s actions will not depend on the unfolding of negotiations with Washington and NATO, but on Russia’s own security.

“Is it us who are putting missiles near the US borders? No. It’s the US who came to our homes with its missiles, it’s already on the threshold of our homes,” he stressed.

The Russian president wondered whether it is an excessive and rare demand for the West not to place more missile systems near Russia and what the US reaction would be if Moscow were to place its missiles on the border with Mexico or Canada.

NATO countries are the ones that should “immediately, now” provide security guarantees to Russia and not the other way around, he said, answering a question on what guarantees Moscow can offer that it will not attack Ukraine or any other sovereign state.
