University of Havana, 294 years of history

Havana, Jan 5 (Prensa Latina) The University of Havana (UH), Cuba's oldest institution of its kind and considered the nation's identity reference, commemorates today its 294 years of foundation, recognized for its academic excellence and social relevance.

On the occasion of the date, the academic headquarters prepared a program of activities that includes the central ceremony at the San Geronimo University College, with the presence of authorities of the sector and other personalities.

Also, young people from that institution will lay a wreath at the site where the remains of the historian of the City of Havana Eusebio Leal (1942-2020) rest, in the Convent of San Francisco de Asis.

In the afternoon, the graduation ceremony for the 2020-2021 academic year will take place at the Aula Magna of the UH.

As part of the celebrations, the Gravitational Law exhibition was inaugurated the day before at the L Gallery in the Vedado neighborhood. Contemporary plastic art in the Adelaida de Juan art collection, which expresses the relationship between the events of the country and the university.

The UH was founded on January 5, 1728 by Dominican friars from the San Juan de Letran convent, and was called the Royal and Pontifical University of San Geronimo de La Habana.

According to the institution’s website, its mission is to contribute to economic, social, cultural and political development, through the deployment of continuous training processes of integral professionals, science, technology and innovation and university extension.

It currently has 16 faculties, three Science, Technology and Innovation Entities, an institute and research centers in a variety of fields.

In addition, it has an enrollment of 14,214 undergraduate students and 1,273 faculty members.

The Top Universities portal lists the UH as the cradle of the most advanced Cuban thought and action.

Considered the Alma Mater of higher education on the island, it works permanently for academic excellence and social relevance, supported by a strong national and international projection, the source adds.

In its classrooms studied renowned figures in the history of Cuba, such as Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, Ignacio Agramonte, Antonio Guiteras, Juan Marinello, José Lezama Lima, Dulce María Loynaz, Roberto Fernández Retamar and the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.
