This request was made due to the concern over the surge in Covid-19 cases reported in the past few weeks.

“We are very concerned over the transmission of the virus in schools, and this could proliferate,” health secretary of the municipality, Francisco Viteri, said.

The specific request is to review the availability of the national Emergency Operations Committee according to the profiles of each locality.

Another proposal is the establishment of a Covid-19 passport, made available through an app that would provide information about the carrier’s vaccination schedule.

In the past 24 hours, Ecuador reported 2,837 new Covid-19 cases, amid an exponential rise since last month when the country celebrated two holidays: Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Quito, in addition to being the city with the largest population in this South American country, is the one with the highest number of Covid-19 cases despite the wide coverage of the vaccination campaign.
