On Thursday, Minister of the Presidency, Maria Nela Prada, announced that this initiative has been taken on under Supreme Decree 4650, published on the official Gazette.

She added that several institutions will take prevention actions for a cultural change in order to avoid gender violence through decolonization and depatriarchalization.

“During 2021, nine out of 10 victims of family or domestic violence were women (…) These data should not only prompt us to reflect, but also to constantly mobilize and take action,” Prada said.

According to the Ministry of Justice, 50 percent of the complaints against crimes committed in the country in 2021 have to do with family or domestic violence against women.

According to the head of the UN Women office in this nation, Nidya Pesantez, Bolivia is the South American country with the highest rate of femicides. However, she said that it has an advanced, progressive national legal framework, “but we have not managed to ensure the full enforcement of the law,” she said.

Some 107 feminicides were registered in Bolivia between January 1 and December 21, 2021, according to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Crimes against Life and Personal Integrity.
