The official said that police forces regained control of all local administration buildings that were assaulted by rioters many of them armed and the functioning of community services and vital support systems are being restored.

At least 16 Kazakhstan police officers, National Guard and Defense Ministry servicemen were reportedly killed during the violent disturbances in Kazakhstan and more than 1,300 people were injured.

During the riots, law enforcement agencies detained nearly 5,800 people, many of them foreigners, and 125 criminal proceedings were initiated, the presidential press service said Sunday.

Turgumbayev noted that during the demonstrations of the last days the most difficult situation happened in Almaty, the former capital of the country, where on January 5 about 20.000 people seized the local government headquarters.

He stressed that in all actions the demonstrators showed professional skills, discipline and organization, an evidence the attacked had been carefully planned.

“Before the attack security cameras were deactivated, they set up barricades on the roads and observation posts on the perimeters. To coordinate actions, they used radio stations,” the minister explained.

The official said that Almaty international airport was also seized, which led to the cancellation of flights, while all stores and ATMs in the air terminal were looted.
