China rules out confining Beijing for Winter Olympics so far

Beijing, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) For the moment, China has ruled out the confinement of Beijing while holding the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, to protect it from the rise of national outbreaks of Covid-19 even with the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, official sources said today.

Huang Chun, director of the Organizing Committee of the games, denied information on the matter, stating that they continue to monitor the evolution of the disease in the country and will adjust the sanitary measures if a large-scale spread of the disease occurs during the Games.

He assured that the bubble adopted since last 4th in the sports facilities is working smoothly, the whole situation is under control and no athlete from Spain has left this mechanism or toured central areas of Beijing, as was rumored this weekend.

Although he emphasized that the health protocols of the competitions and the capital could change, he stressed that the confinement of the city is not an option at present.

The Beijing-2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics are just three weeks away, but several regions in China are experiencing Covid-19 outbreaks that are keeping the number of reported cases above 100 daily and some have imposed city-wide confinement to curb virus circulation.

One of the most worrying outbreaks, which is that of Tianjin because it borders this capital, was caused by Omicron and since the weekend at least 80 confirmed and asymptomatic cases have been detected, with a high incidence among primary and secondary school students.

That municipality, Beijing and five other provinces of the Asian giant called on their inhabitants to avoid crowded places, to use masks, to reinforce vaccination with a third dose and to avoid traveling during the coming Lunar New Year vacations.
