“I share my heartfelt messages of condolences for the death this morning of the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli,” she wrote on her Twitter account.

The diplomat highlighted in her tweet that the esplanade of the European Parliament in Brussels brought together hundreds of people to acknowledge his work.

Sassoli was 65 years old and had been admitted to the Aviano hospital in Italy on December 26 for a serious complication in his immune system.

For the first time a top official of the EU dies in the exercise of his post, which he had held since 2019.
