The Ecuadorian Pediatric Society is one of the institutions that issued alerts, whereas the Health Secretariat of the Metropolitan District of Quito also reported a rise in the hospitalization of children under five years of age with respiratory problems related to this illness.
This rise is consistent with the outbreak of the Omicron variant in the country, whose first case was made public on Dec.14. Omicron is currently the predominant variant in this nation.
In the capital alone, some 191,000 cases have been reported since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, a figure that has surged in the past few weeks
In this regard, pediatric statistics indicate that the hspital of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security Quito South alone has admitted up to 200 children with respiratory symptomatology every day for two weeks, 41 percent of whom tested positive.
Until Jan. 7, the Ministry of Public Health reported 68 cases of this age group in the capital, in the first epidemiological week of the year.
Experts agree that, besides the complications from this disease, parents’ non-compliance or relaxation of biosecurity measures further exposes children to contract Covid-19.
Therefore, they are urged not to take children to indoor facilities such as movie theaters, malls or other poorly ventilated places and to comply with the basic biosecurity protocol, especially social distancing, frequent washing of the hands and the use of face masks, as far as possible.
