China calls Guantánamo prison a dark page for Human Rights

Beijing, Jan 12 (Prensa Latina) China qualified today the existence of the prison at the Guantánamo naval base as a dark page in the history of Human Rights and urged the United States to shutting it down along with other similar prisons.

Wang Wenbin, spokesman of the Ministery of Foreign Affairs, deplored that Washington maintains this facility operating and even abuses of 39 individuals retained there, despite of international demands for its closure.

He recalled that in the last 20 years the abuse of Guantánamo prison inmates outraged the world, the White House failed to fulfill its repeated promise of shutting it down and confined persons without even having criminal charges.

Finally, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman called Whashington to inmediatly close not only this prison, but also the rest it secretly has in other parts of the world, stop arbritary detentions and to compemsate the victims.

Specialists stated that of approximaly 700 people detained there in the last 20 years, only nine of them have been accused or convicted of crimes and nine died in this prison, seven of them kill themselves and without formal accusations.

Nowadays, despite public statements by the authorities about the supposed interest in closing the prison, The New York Times reveled las week that the Pentagon is building there a new secret room in order to hold trials for war crimes.
