Stampede in religious act in Liberia kills 29

Liberia, estampida, muertos
Monrovia, Jan 20 (Prensa Latina) Liberian government authorities reported today that 29 civilians, including children, died, and others are in critical condition as a result of a stampede during a religious celebration near the capital.

The Deputy Minister of Information, Jalawah Tonpo, told the LNTV network that the event occurred in the New Kru Town neighborhood, when devout Protestants gathered last night in a worship center.

Although the government representative did not say what was the cause of the stampede, other sources, including a deputy, stated that the event took place when unknown elements blocked the entrance to the religious facility.

Liberia is an impoverished country in West Africa, with a population of more than four million inhabitants, which suffered two successive civil wars, the first from 1989 to 1996 and the second from 1999 to 2003, leaving thousands dead and displaced.
