President of Kazakhstan creates Special Operations Forces

Nur-Sultan, Jan 24 (Prensa Latina) The President of Kazakhstan, Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev, approved the creation of the Special Operations Command of the Armed Forces of this country, according to the decree published today on the legal information portal.

According to the document, the objective of the new body is to improve Kazakhstan’s national security system, a decision linked to the latest violent events in the country, which were part of an attempted coup.

Tokayev held a recent meeting with the heads of the security agencies of Kazakhstan, in which he gave instructions to accelerate the formation of the Special Operations Forces and present concrete proposals on the reform of the national security system.

The state of emergency throughout the territory of Kazakhstan ended on January 19th. According to the Kazakh Prosecutor General’s Office, the disturbances in the first week of January in the country caused the death of at least 225 people and more than 4,500 wounded, in addition to the arrest of thousands involved.

Kazakhstan is recovering from the considerable economic damage caused by vandalism, valued at between two and three billion dollars, with damage to around 1,300 buildings, more than 100 shopping centers and banks, in addition to the fact that some 500 police cars were set on fire.
