Under the agreement, Afghanistan agreed to share water from Helmand river with Iran and will supply 26 cubic meters of water per second or 850 million cubic meters per year.
The announcement by the Taliban government comes two days after complaint from the Iranian Foreign Minister, who pleaded that Tehran did not receive last year its share of the water resource.
The spokesman of the Foreign Ministry of Iran, Saeed Khatibzadeh, stated last Monday at a press conference that in 2021 the Persian nation only received less than 5% of its share of water.
On the other hand, the Afghan Ministry of Energy and Water disclosed that the Islamic emirate is committed to giving Iran its share based on the 1973 water treaty.
According to officials of this government, not enough water may not have reached Iran in the past year due to droughts in Afghanistan.
