Havana, Jan 28 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is seeking to return to the top places in chess and holds events to promote that sport, such as a simultaneous chess tournament to pay tribute to National Hero Jose Marti (1853-1895) on Friday.

In exclusive statements to Prensa Latina, Cuban Chess Federation President Carlos Rivero announced the implementation of strategies to maintain the Caribbean island’s supremacy in Latin American and the Caribbean, and even worldwide.

We want the women’s national team to rank among the top 15 in the upcoming World Olympics, scheduled from September 10-23 in Russia, while the men’s team will be improved to reap yesteryear’s victories, the official noted.

Rivero also alluded to the excellent moment that the practice of chess is experiencing among university students, and praised the great performance given by the teams that participated in online events scheduled by the International Federation of University Sports.

We will develop the national championships for both men and women in the provinces of Holguin and Villa Clara in February, and we will also host the Guillermo García and Capablanca In Memoriam international tournaments, he noted.
