The acceptance of the resignation, a formality, because the resignation was irrevocable, was announced on Sunday night by the president on his Twitter account and after a meeting of the Council of Ministers and a conversation with outgoing Minister Avelino Guillen.

The decision was made after a long presidential silence in the face of the conflict raised by Gallardo’s refusal to accept the minister’s provisions on the police command structure and after two weeks of requesting an audience with the president without any response, as he stated after resigning.

The situation generated a political crisis for which Castillo was harshly attacked by the extreme right, and he was harshly criticized by other political sectors, including the co-governing New Peru Movement, whose former presidential candidate, Veronika Mendoza, spoke out on the issue.
