According to Alfredo Moltó, advisor to the Ministry of Health (Minsa), the behavior of the predominant variant of SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease, indicates this trend for the coming weeks, but biosecurity measures must be stepped up.

The also director of the School of Public Health of the University of Panama, explained that deaths occur more frequently two weeks after the contagion reached the top of the plateau.

“We see that there is a significant number of deaths, but we also see that there is a decrease in the number of new infections. We hope to have reached the peak and that we will start to reduce the number of cases”, he added.

In any case, the expert called to stay away from excessive optimism “lest there be any surprises”, he toldnewspaper La Estrella de Panama newspaper.

The behavior of the Omicron variant in other regions of the world is that cases increase exponentially in a period of four to six weeks. Subsequently, it stabilizes in a plateau for a couple of weeks, and then new infections begin to decrease very fast.
