Díaz-Canel reaffirms call to debate new family Code

Havana, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Presidente Miguel Diaz-Canel stressed the importance for Cuba of the new Family Code, now under popular consultation, and reapeted his call on the people to study and enrich it.

“The more details I learn about the Family Code, the more I am convinced that it is essential for today´s Cuban society. Now that the popular consultation has begun, I invite my compatriots to review and get to know it. We can all contribute,” the President wrote on Twitter.

Since February 1, more than 7 million voters and Cubans living abroad are invited to debate until April 30, this legal code, considered by experts as advanced, inclusive and adjusted to the current Cuban reality.

The proposals derived from this round of analysis by the population will be submitted to the Drafting Commission for processing in May, and evaluation by the parliament, which willl approve a new version that will be submitted to a referendum.

Among other aspects, the code proposes greater inclusion including gay marriages, not only of people who are diverse due to their sexual orientation, but also different due to their age, the exercise of capacity and plurality.

According to the president of the Cuban Society of Civil and Family Law, Leonardo Pérez, the regulation recognizes multiparentality and socio-affective relationships, which makes it one of the most groundbreaking in Latin America.
