The coup by the Burmese military on February 1, 2021 overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, whose National League for Democracy party would begin a second five-year term after winning in November elections last year.

Opponents of the current government in the country called for a “silent strike” aimed at emptying the streets of cities and towns; they called on people to stay at home and close businesses.

At least 58 people were arrested since last week after posting notices on Social Networks that their stores and businesses would be closed on Tuesday, according to reports in the state-run Myanma Alinn Daily newspaper.

The de facto government warned that they would arrest and try those who participated in the strike and be convicted of offenses under the Anti-Terrorism Act that carry maximum sentences of life imprisonment and possible confiscation of their property.
