Syria increases operations to fight drug trafficking

Damascus, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian security forces have intensified their operations against drug trafficking and frustrated several attempts to smuggle drugs on the borders with Lebanon and Jordan in the last two days, official sources reported on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Interior announced in a communique that anti-drug troops, through ambushes in Daraa province bordering Jordan, managed to confiscate a drug shipment that contained hundreds of kilos of hashish and tens of thousands of amphetamine tablets.

The smugglers were arrested and will be brought to justice, while others involved in these operations are being investigated and pursued, the text reported.

In addition, a first lieutenant was killed and another officer was wounded in clashes during an operation to raid premises used by drug traffickers in al-Qadam and Sebeineh districts, south of Damascus.

Syrian authorities denied accusations by some Western Governments that the Arab nation supports drug trafficking, and attributed the seizure of large quantities of drugs to Syria’s geographical location, which has become it a transit country to production and consumption.
