UN chief urges the need to preserve wetlands

United Nations, Feb 2 (Prensa Latina) Wetlands are critical to fight biodiversity loss and tackle the climate crisis, yet they are one of the world´s most threatened habitats, UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres tweeted Wednesday.

Ahead of the World Wetlands Day, Mr. Guterres insisted on the need to end the war against nature and “take care of it till it recovers health.”

UNSG also shared a text providing a great number of data on significance of wetlands to keep life on the planet in balance.

According to recent reports from the UN Environment Program (UNEP), wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests and are the most threatened ecosystem on Earth.

In just over 50 years since 1970, 35% of these ecosystems have been lost throughout the planet, the UNEP said.

Although they only cover about 6% of the earth’s surface, 40% of all plant and animal species live or breed in them.

UNEP reported that more than one billion people around the world (, approximately one in eight people on Earth) depend on wetlands for their livelihoods.
