ACNU calls for the end of US blockade against Cuba

Havana, Feb 3 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Association of the United Nations (ACNU, in Spanish) on Thursday called for the end of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, considered as a massive and systematic violation of human rights.

In a statement, ACNU -on behalf of its collective and individual partners- strongly condemned the implementation of the “illegal, unjust and criminal” blockade by the different US administrations and its tightening amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This genocidal policy is an act of economic aggression; violates international law and the principle of sovereign equality among States; and seeks to reverse the political and social system the Cuban people has decided for themselves, in full exercise of their self-determination,” said the text.

The text also pointed out the US blockade threatens international cooperation and has a very negative impact on Cuba´s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) passed by the UN General Assembly.

The set of coercive measures generates shortages for the Cuban people, violates their right to food and health, violates the right to life, significantly affects all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable sectors such as women and girls, said ACNU.

“The US blockade is the major obstacle to the development of our nation,” as it contravenes the UN Charter and its founding principles and purposes.
