Alert of Covid-19 overload in intensive care in Uruguay

Uruguay, Covid-19, cuidados, intensivos, sobrecarga
Montevideo, Feb 4 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SUMI) warned today of an overload in intensive care treatment centers (CTI) due to the exponential increase of Covid-19 cases.

The National Emergency System reported 157 hospitalizations, 39 deaths and 10026 new cases out of 27,000 tests carried out, for a positivity of 36.51 percent.

The representative of SUMI, Mauricio Bertullo, pointed out that patient care is also compromised due to personnel who have also get infected.

As he explained, a significant number of those hospitalized were admitted for other pathologies and once they contract the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, they must be taken to specific areas for the disease caused by that pathogen, in moves that overload the system and begin to change the protective measures.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Health issued an ordinance to reinforce the human resources of the assistance services, with the inclusion of Nursing and Medicine students who meet certain requirements.

The head of the portfolio, Daniel Salinas, explained in his account on the social network Twitter that this support is enabled in low complexity tasks at the first level of care, especially in emergencies, under the supervision of those who completed the intermediate degree of Bachelor of Nursing and Medicine students who passed the fourth year of studies.

At present, 66,625 Uruguayans are convalescing from Covid-19, distributed in the country’s 19 departments, with the largest number in the capital Montevideo.
