In the past three yaers, the continent registered a decrease in rainfalls and its worst drought periods since 1981, the Organization of the United States agency reported.

This phenomenon destroyed crops and provoked high animal mortality, forcing rural families, who make their living from livestock and agriculture, to abandon their homes.

There is a lack of water and grassland and the below-average rainfalls forecasts for the coming months are compounding the misery, WFP´s East Africa director, Michael Dunford, said.

The food aid is distributed in a arid strip of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia, where the rates of undernourishment are high, he explained.

Some 5,7 million people need food assistance in southern and southeastern Ethiopia, including half million undernourished mothers and children, he said.
