The resolution was approved by the deputies with 79 votes in favor, 60 against and one abstention.

However, the opposition plans to initiate a collection of signatures to hold a referendum on the matter.

According to the country’s Attorney General, Maros Zilinka, the agreement violates 35 clauses of Slovak law and jeopardizes the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The bilateral agreement between the two states will allow Americans to use several military airports in Slovakia free of charge and will allocate about $100 million for the modernization of the defense infrastructure.

The document will be in force for 10 years and might be subsequently renewed or revoked.
