Havana, Feb 10 (Prensa Latina) The Innovation and Development Foundation of the University of Havana (UH), the only one of its kind in Cuba, generates exportable products and is currently working on 15 projects that contribute to the technology, agriculture and health sectors .

In statements to Prensa Latina, the commercial specialist of that institution, Aliber Velázquez, pointed out that they implement innovative solutions in cancer research and drug development.

She mentioned that they have a project to improve the use of imaging to obtain a more accurate diagnosis, with applications to conditions such as diabetic foot syndrome.

Velázquez referred that among the main results of the entity is the transfer of technology to a Canadian company of Nerea, a substrate for the cultivation of plants without soil (zeoponics).

The institution also has Biobras 16, a broad-spectrum fertilizer that increases yields between 10 and 25 percent, marketed with national companies, the source commented.

In addition to the sale of products and services, the entity attached to the capital’s university provides international academic advice and services.

In this sense, it supports students and foreigners who want to come to study and do research, and even participate in the Foundation’s projects, explained the commercial specialist.

To this is added the export of services with teachers who want to participate in projects and teach courses in other countries.

The Foundation created by decree of December 2020 is governed by the Ministries of Higher Education, Justice, and Science, Technology and Environment, while maintaining links with the National Innovation Council.

The institution intends to take the research carried out in the university to national and international companies, as well as private businesses.

The idea is to create alliances between the different faculties of the UH using their knowledge and skills for specialized consultancies on specific issues and provide solutions to specific problems, Velázquez pointed out.

The Foundation is focused on expanding collaboration with Cuban higher education institutions, organizations and entities dedicated to research, as well as participation in cooperation projects with other nations, she added.

Introducing novelties is a priority for the Government of Cuba and for this it created the National Council of Innovation, a consultative body of the State that assists the President of the Republic and makes recommendations to promote the development of the economy and society.
